These are some of the things that make life happy for me. In no particular order. Not an exhaustive list.

Horses.
Plenty of vegetables.
People to love and be loved by.
Cooking delicious things and eating them.
Wine (especially a nice pinot noir.)
Chocolate (the darker the better.)
Snuggling (with humans, horses, and dogs, in order of preference.)
Big fat slow snowflakes.
Colorful leaves.
French bread.
In the summer, the veggie garden.
The smell of fresh pine shavings in a just-cleaned stall.
Trails in the woods.
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
A barnful of sweet-smelling hay.
Hearing my students play beautifully.
Hearing my students play not-so-beautifully, as long as they’re doing their very best.
Working out at the gym.
Creating things, whether with pixels or art supplies.
My red shoes.
Ice Skating.
Mismatched socks.
Books.

1. Fix my bike, then go on lots of long bike rides. Who wants to come?
2. Complete the “Summer Reading” list I’ve been compiling all school year. Walter Marshall on Sanctification, the Chronicles of Narnia,
maybe LOTR again, Andrew Murray on prayer, some classics, Anne of Green
Gables, Dante’s Inferno, the Homeric Hymns, Fairy Tales in Latin, Seneca’s Letters, re-read Piper’s Desiring God, …
3. Devos. Every Day. One Hour minimum. Me and God.
4. Memorize the Heidelberg
5. Get a Horse
6. Road Trip(s)!! hopefully multiple ones. I need a travelling companion–call me to schedule! I’ll go anywhere, anytime, although I’d especially like to make it out to Chattanooga, TN, St. Louis, MO, and Arkansas
7. Let’s make some money, baby.
8. Work hard at becoming more disciplined
9. Buff up my skinny-weakling arms so that I can lift Mr. Jigs’ saddle onto his back (pretty much above my head) without help. Abby “Buff Arms” Tjapkes, do you have any suggestions for this one?
10. Attend Summer Latin & Summer Greek EVERY WEEK. Weds. from 1-4,
three hours of language-induced torture with my favorite professors.
11. Fall asleep in the hay field looking up at the stars, and wake up to the sunrise.
12. Compile an album of hymns for beginner violin.
13. Research music theory curriculum.
14. Arrange some hymns for advanced violin.
15. Learn another language, possibly Old English.
16. Record a CD or two with Carrie.
17. Finish the band’s website.
18. Study hard.
19. Write a novel.
20. Get up with the sunrise 6 mornings out of 7.
21. Convince myself I don’t need 7 hours of sleep each night.
22. Keep in touch with those going far away.
23. Go to the beach often, seeing as I live less than 30 minutes away.

10 Reasons I Love Living Here

1. Even on a cloudy day, we don’t have to turn the lights on until 5:30 PM. That’s how much light we get.
2. When I get home every day, I am greeted by a veritable pack of large, happy, muddy neighborhood dogs. This is endearing, even after I realize that prior to my arrival, they had been occupied with scattering our garbage everywhere between here and the next county.
3. I love looking out the window at the undulating lines of the hills against the horizon and the borders between the fields. It’s really quite artful.
4. Birds. Everywhere. Gorgeous.
5. Sunrise
6. Sunset
7. Watching the neighbor’s horses cavort around the pasture
8. I love the dirt roads, even though my car has ‘WASH ME’ permanently emblazoned across the side, and from time to time they get so rutted that it’s necessary to go about 25 MPH in order not to ruin your car’s suspension
9. Everything is relaxed, it seems–time is relaxed, the boundaries between ‘your space’ and ‘my space’ are relaxed as dogs and children ‘trespass’ all over the neighborhood; traffic laws are relaxed according to my brother, who maintains that the stop sign is more of a suggestion than a rule…
10. My bedroom
